Treatment protocol After being housed in our facilities for one week to acclimate, the rats were randomly divided into four groups (6 animals per group) including one normal saline (NS) control group (dosing volume 10 ml/kg) and three CO groups (dosing volume 2, 5, 10 ml/kg, respectively). All groups were administered NS or CO by gavage once daily for 14 consecutive days.
Growth protocol Female Wistar rats obtained from Beijing Vital River Laboratory Animal Technology Co., Ltd (licensed by Beijing Administrative Office of Laboratory Animal, China) were used at the age of 7 wks. All animals were bred specific pathogen-free and kept in polycarbonate cages (L×W×H: 460×315×210 mm) under condition of 22±3 ºC, 40-70% relative humidity and 12-h light-dark cycle. Standard rodent diet and water were available ad libitum throughout the study. Rats were housed 3 per cage.
Extracted molecule total RNA
Extraction protocol Total RNA was isolated using Trizol reagent (Invitrogen, Gaithersburg, MD) according to the manufacture’s instructions. The quantity of RNA in each sample was assessed spectrophotometerically (NanoDrop Technologies, Wilmington, DE) and RNA integrity was assessed by formaldehyde agarose gel electrophoresis.
Label Cy3
Label protocol RNA was amplified and labeled using Agilent LowInput Quick Amp Labeling Kit.
 
Hybridization protocol Fluorescence dye labeled cRNA was hybridized to Agilent Rat Whole Genome 8×*60K array according to the instructions of Agilent Gene Expression Hybridization Kit.
Scan protocol Scanned on an Agilent G2505C scanner.
Images were quantified using Agilent Feature Extraction Software (version 10.7.3.1).

Data processing Agilent GeneSpring GX 11.5 was used for background subtraction and Lowess normalization.
