Treatment protocol All rats were treated with intranasal insulin aspart or saline (control) for 3 months, and were subjected to the Morris water maze task prior to hippocampus removal.
Extracted molecule total RNA
Extraction protocol Hippocampi were thawed on ice and homogenized in RiboZol™ Extraction Reagent (#97064-948; VWR®, Radnor, PA). RNA was precipitated with chloroform and isopropanol, then resuspended in a 75% ethanol solution.

Label protocol Biotinylated cRNA prepared according to standard Affymetrix protocol
 
Hybridization protocol Following fragmentation, cRNA was hybridized for 16hr at 45 degrees C, on Clariom_S_Rat Affymetrix arrays (Affymetrix Fluidics Station 450)
Scan protocol Scanning performed according to vendor instructions on Affymetrics GCS 3000 7G scanner. .CEL files produced were used for subsequent analyses.

Data processing .CEL files were processed with Partek software to RMA (log2) estimates of signal intensity.
