The Serratia marcescens siderophore, serratiochelin, is necessary for full virulence during bloodstream infection

(Submitter supplied) Serratia marcescens is a bacterium frequently found in the environment, but over the last several decades it has evolved into a concerning clinical pathogen, causing fatal bacteremia. To establish such infections, pathogens require specific nutrients; one very limited but essential nutrient is iron. We sought to characterize the iron acquisition systems in S. marcescens isolate UMH9, which was recovered from a clinical bloodstream infection. more...

Functional redundancy of iron acquisition systems is required for Proteus mirabilis pathogenesis during UTI

(Submitter supplied) Proteus mirabilis is a primary cause of complicated urinary tract infections (UTI). Surprisingly, iron acquisition systems have been poorly characterized in this uropathogen despite the urinary tract being iron-limited. In this report the transcriptome of strain HI4320, cultured under iron limitation, was examined using microarray analysis. Of genes upregulated at least 2-fold, 45 were statistically significant and comprise 21 putative iron-regulated systems. more...

SCBI Wild type and mutant Expression data

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: To compare RNASeq data of wild type and mutants under standard growth conditions (Stationary Phase)28C for 18 h. The mutants were found defective in genes encoding the following proteins: an alkaline metalloprotease secretion protein AprE, GidA, and a PIN domain protein. RNA-seq analysis provided insight into how inactivation of AprE, GidA and a PIN-domain protein influences global gene expression

Spaceflight and simulated microgravity conditions increase virulence of Serratia marcescens in the Drosophila melanogaster infection model

(Submitter supplied) While it has been shown that astronauts suffer immune disorders after spaceflight, the underlying causes are still poorly understood and there are many variables to consider when investigating the immune system in a complex environment. Additionally, there is growing evidence that suggests that not only is the immune system being altered, but the pathogens that infect the host are significantly influenced by spaceflight and ground-based spaceflight conditions. more...

RNA-seq analysis in simulated microgravity unveils down-regulation of the beta-rhizobial siderophore phymabactin

(Submitter supplied) Exploiting the symbiotic interaction between crops and nitrogen-fixing bacteria is a simple and ecological solution to promote plants growth in prospective extraterrestrial human outposts. In this study, we investigated the adaptation of the legume symbiont Paraburkholderia phymatum to simulated microgravity (s0-g) at the transcriptome level by performing an RNA-Seq analysis. The results revealed a drastic effect on gene expression, with roughly 23 % of P. more...
