In vivo gene expression changes in human blood cells in response to radiation therapy.

(Submitter supplied) Our in vivo study measures miRNA and gene expression changes in human blood cells in response to ionizing radiation in order to develop miRNA signatures that can be used as biomarkers for radiation exposure. Blood was collected from 8 radiotherapy patients immediately prior to and at 4 h after total body irradiation with 1.25 Gy X-rays. Both miRNA and gene expression changes were measured by means of quantitative PCR and microarray hybridization, respectively. more...

Expression of miRNA, lncRNA and mRNA in human lymphoblastoid TK6 cells under simulated microgravity after ionizing radiation

(Submitter supplied) In space, multiple unique environmental factors, particularly microgravity and space radiation, pose constant threat to the astronaut’s health. To gain insight into the role of miRNAs and lncRNAs in response to radiation and microgravity, we analyzed RNA expression profiles in human lymphoblastoid TK6 cells incubated for 24 h in static condition or in rotating condition to stimulate microgravity in space after 2 Gy γ-ray irradiation. more...

Comparison of gene expression response to neutron and x-ray irradiation using mouse blood

(Submitter supplied) Background: In the event of an improvised nuclear device detonation, the prompt radiation exposure would consist of γ rays plus a neutron component that would contribute to the total dose. As neutrons cause more complex and difficult to repair damage to cells that would result in more severe health burden to affected individuals, it is paramount to be able to estimate the contribution of neutrons to an estimated dose, to provide information for those making treatment decisions. more...

Two miRNA signatures for identifying nasopharyngeal carcinoma from head-neck tumors and the normal

(Submitter supplied) Reports show that miRNAs have been implicated in various cancers and functions as both oncogenes and tumor suppressors in tumour initiation, progression, and response to treatment. Our study is conducted to identify circulating miRNA profile in NPC patients using whole blood samples with clinical significant diagnostic value. Microarray profiling identified 117 differentially expressed miRNAs (fold change≥1.5) between NPC patients and healthy control and 164 differentially expressed miRNAs (fold change≥1.5) between NPC and HNT patients and healthy control. more...

DEVELOPMENTAL MicroRNA EXPRESSION PROFILING OF MURINE EMBRYONIC OROFACIAL TISSUE

(Submitter supplied) BACKGROUND: Orofacial development is a multifaceted process involving precise, spatio-temporal expression of a panoply of genes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) constitute the largest family of noncoding RNAs involved in gene silencing, and represent critical regulators of cell and tissue differentiation. MicroRNA gene expression profiling is an effective means of acquiring novel and valuable information regarding the expression and regulation of genes, under the control of miRNA, involved in mammalian orofacial development. more...

Differential expression patterns of microRNAs in a mouse model after whole body radiation

(Submitter supplied) Rapid and reliable methods for conducting biological dosimetry are a necessity in the event of a large-scale nuclear event. Timely and accurate methods are thus critical in order to correctly evaluate and identify radiation dose exposure and triage appropriately. Alterations in microRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNAs of 19-22 nucleotides, have been reported in cells/tumors subjected to radiation exposure, implying that miRNAs play an important role in cellular stress response to radiation. more...

Radiation-induced molecular alterations after whole body irradiation in a mouse model

(Submitter supplied) Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as key molecules in regulating many biological processes and have been implicated in development and disease pathogenesis. Biomarkers of cancer and normal tissue response to treatment are of great interest in precision medicine and for public health and medical management of disasters such as assessing radiation injury following accidental or intentional exposure. more...

Analysis of microRNA transcriptome by deep sequencing of small RNA libraries of peripheral blood (seq data)

(Submitter supplied) MicroRNAs are a class of small non-coding RNAs that regulate mRNA expression at the post-transcriptional level and thereby many fundamental biological processes. A number of methods, such as multiplex polymerase chain reaction, microarrays have been developed for profiling levels of known miRNAs. These methods lack ability to identify novel miRNAs and accurately determine expression at a range of concentration. more...
