MicroRNAs in the HIV and Major Depressive Brain

(Submitter supplied) Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene networks, helping to control cell function and phenotype. MiRNAs in the central nervous system (CNS) are considered to be involved in development, function, and homeostasis. Past genomic studies focused on messenger-RNA (mRNA) expression using large-scale hybridization-based arrays for elucidating gene expression in the brain during HIV-infection. more...

Gene Expression in Frontal Cortex in Major Depression and HIV

(Submitter supplied) Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a clinically defined entity with little understanding as to the underlying pathological substrate. Biologically, MDD is characterized by disruption of neurotransmitters, especially serotonin and noradrenaline, which are the main targets of antidepressants. We previously demonstrated significant reduction of glial cell number in the cingulate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortical regions. more...

Gene (mRNA) expression profiling in frontal cortex of ethanol-treated mice

(Submitter supplied) Analysis of early stages of alcohol dependence at the gene expression level. The hypothesis tested in the present study was that ethanol-treatment impact gene expression in a mouse model of high ethanol consumption. Results provide important information of genes and pathways being affected by ethanol actions in the mouse frontal cortex.

MiRNA expression profiles from adult mouse frontal cortex and hippocampus

(Submitter supplied) MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small regulatory molecules that cause post-transcriptional gene silencing. Although some miRNAs are known to have region-specific expression patterns in the adult brain, the functional consequences of the region-specificity to the gene regulatory networks of the brain nuclei are not clear. Therefore, we studied miRNA expression patterns by miRNA-seq in two brain regions, frontal cortex (FCx) and hippocampus (HP), which have separate biological functions. more...

Comparative Expression Profile of miRNA and mRNA in Primary Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) [mRNA]

(Submitter supplied) Host cells respond to exogenous infectious agents such as viruses, including HIV-1. Studies have evaluated the changes associated with virus infection at the transcriptional and translational levels of the cellular genes involved in specific pathways. While this approach is useful, in our view it provides only a partial view of genome-wide changes. Recently, technological advances in the expression profiling at the microRNA (miRNA) and mRNA levels have made it possible to evaluate the changes in the components of multiple pathways. more...

Profiling microRNA expression in bovine alveolar macrophages using RNA-seq

(Submitter supplied) In this study, we determined the miRNA expression profile of bovine alveolar macrophages, using next-generation sequencing strategy. On an Illumina HiSeq 2000 machine, we sequenced 8 miRNA libraries, prepared from small RNA fractions of alveolar macrophages isolated from 8 different healthy animals (Bos taurus). From the data, the potential novel miRNAs were predicted, and the expression levels of the known miRNAs were determined. more...

miRNA profiling of CD4+ T cells in chronically infected HIV-1 patients, LTNPs and healthy controls

(Submitter supplied) We extracted total RNA from CD4+ T cells from 3 patient groups: chronic HIV-1 patients (CHI), long term non-progressors (LTNPs) and healthy controls (HC). Array results show that a large number of miRNAs are altered in HIV-1 infected patients compared to HC. Most of the differentially expressed miRNAs are down-regulated but there are some up-regulated miRNAs. A particular family of miRNAs which appear to be downregulated in HIV-1 infected patients is the let-7 family of miRNAs.
