To induce type 1 diabetes, 65 mg/kg of streptozotocin (STZ) was injected i.p. into 10- to 16-week-old mice on 5 consecutive days while respective controls were mock-injected with citrate buffer. Animals were sacrificed 9-11 weeks after this treatment.
