Growth protocol |
S. aureus strains were grown in complex medium. Bacteria from an overnight culture were diluted to an initial optical density at 600 nm (OD600) of 0.05 in fresh medium and grown with shaking (220 rpm) at 37°C till late exponential growth phase (OD600 = 1.5).

Bacteria were lysed in Trizol reagent (Invitrogen) with 0.5 ml of zirconia-silica beads (0.1-mm diameter) in a high-speed homogenizer. RNA was then isolated as described in the instructions provided by the manufacturer of Trizol.
