Blood samples from patients with systemic sclerosis or bacteremia, respectively, were collected in PAXgene blood RNA tubes (BD Biosciences, Heidelberg, Germany). Total RNA from PAXgene samples was prepared according to the manufacturer´s recommendations including an optional DNAse digestion step.

cDNA and biotin-labeled cRNA synthesis was generated from 100 ng total RNA using the Illumina® TotalPrep™ RNA Amplification Kit (Applied Biosystems, Darmstadt, Germany).
Hybridization protocol
cRNA (1.5 µg) was hybridized to Human-6 Expression BeadChips V1 and V2 (Illumina, San Diego, CA).
Scan protocol
Scanning was performed on the Illumina(r) BeadStation 500x.
