Muscle biopsies were flash frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at -80°C until usage. Samples were homogenized using an IKA ultra-turrax T8 homogenizer

Trizol extraction of total RNA was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Tot RNA was further purified using the RNAeasy mini purification kit (QIAGEN) according to the RNA cleanup protocol

Biotinylated cRNA were prepared according to the standard Affymetrix protocol from 5 microg total RNA (Expression Analysis Technical Manual, 2001, Affymetrix).

Following fragmentation, 10 microg of cRNA were hybridized for 16 hr at 45C on HG 133A Array. GeneChips were washed and stained in the Affymetrix Fluidics Station 400.
