RNA was extracted with Trizol reagent, followed by clean-up with QIAGEN RNeasy mini kit in accordance with the prescribed protocol provided with the kit. Quality control was performed with Agilent Bioanalyser.

Data processing |
The data were background corrected with GenomeStudio v1.9.0. Data was customized to include only probes that were detected at greater than or equal to 95% confidence in all baboon samples of at least one tissue type from previous Illumina gene expression experiments (n=22,148). These included probe signals from fetal baboon brain (n=12), liver (n=12), placenta (n=12), and kidney (n=12). All median normalisation and log2 transformation was performed on the filtered dataset in Genesifter Analysis Edition (http://www.geospiza.com/Products/AnalysisEdition.shtml).
