Chronic hypoxia changes gene expression profile of primary rat carotid body cells: consequences on the expression of NOS isoforms and ET-1 receptors

(Submitter supplied) Chronic hypoxia (CH) produces changes not fully understood in morphology and function of the carotid body (CB). To characterize the effect of CH, primary rat CB cells were exposed to 7 days of CH, total RNA was extracted, cDNA-32P synthesized and hybridized with 1185 genes printed on a nylon membrane. Out of 324 differentially expressed genes, 184 were up-regulated and 140 were down-regulated. Since data analyses showed that nitric oxide synthases (NOS) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) pathways were enriched, we studied the effect of CH at protein levels of NOS isoforms and ET-1 receptors. more...

Cardiac and Soleus muscles following exposure of rats to heat acclimation and exercise training

(Submitter supplied) The processes of adaptation to environmental heat and aerobic exercise training improve efficiency in various body systems and bring about acclimatory homeostasis. In order to examine the global genomic responses of the soleus and heart following exposure of rats to these stressors, nylon cDNA Atlas Array was used. Male rats were exposed to one of the following stressors: heat acclimation, aerobic training (treadmill), and combined heat acclimation and aerobic training for short (2, 3 days) and long (1 mo) time period. more...

Mesenteric adipose tissue of rats treated with oleoyl-estrone

(Submitter supplied) The aim of this work was to determine if OE treatment affects the expression of genes that regulate lipid metabolism in white adipose tissue. Gene expression in adipose tissue from female treated rats (48 hours) was analysed by hybridization to cDNA arrays and levels of specific mRNAs were determined by Real-Time PCR. Treatment with OE decreased the expression of 232 genes and up-regulated 75 other genes in mesenteric white adipose tissue. more...

ALCAR supplementation to unloaded soleus muscle

(Submitter supplied) The effect of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) supplementation to hindlimb suspended rats has been analyzed in order to test whether this would promote the differentiation towards an oxidative phenotype of muscle fibers in soleus muscle and prevent the transformation of this slow tonic muscle towards a glycolytic, low-oxidative phenotype due to unloading condition. 3 month-old rats were daily supplemented with ALCAR concomitantly with hindlimb suspension. more...

Rats hypothalamus during heat acclimation without and together with superimposed hypohydration

(Submitter supplied) We studied the global genomic response in the hypothalamus during heat acclimation, with and without combined hypohydration stress. Rats were acclimated for 2 days or for 30 days at 34°C. Hypohydration (10% decrease in body weight) was attained by water deprivation. Functional analyses demonstrated a bi-phasic acclimatory profile with a transient upregulation of genes encoding ion channels, transporters, and transmitter signaling upon 2 days acclimation, suggesting enhanced neuronal excitability at that acclimation phase. more...
