Design: Total RNA was isolated using the Plant RNeasy kit (Invitrogen) and treated with DNase. mRNA was purified and cDNA samples were prepared and sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2000 platform without prior normalisation.

We have employed NGS to speed up research on this non-model species. We performed a large-scale characterization of the S. dulcamara transcriptome, identified transcript-based SNP and SSR markers and carried out gene expression analysis in order to understand flooding-induced activation of adventitious root primordia, presumed to be adaptive to wet habitats.
