Maf family nucleotide pyrophosphatase

Maf (for multicopy associated filamentation) is a large family of non-essential proteins active as nucleotide pyrophosphatases, with substrate ranges that include modified bases such as 5-methyl-UTP, pseudo-UTP, 5-methyl-CTP, and 7-methyl-GTP. Two members in Escherichia coli are YhdE (a dTTP/UTP pyrophosphatase) and YceF (m(7)GTP pyrophosphatase). The name Maf reflects an early study in Bacillus subtilis showing that overexpression causes inhibition of septum formation.
