staphylokinase domain-containing protein
staphylokinase
The virulence factor staphylokinase, although not an enzyme, triggers an autocatalytic cleavage in plasminogen that converts it into plasmin. Staphylokinase also contributes to virulence by binding to alpha-defensins involved in host defense, rendering them ineffective. The sak gene, encoding staphylokinase, is found in prophage regions of lysogenic strains of Staphyloccus.
