undecaprenyl diphosphate synthase family protein

Previously known as uncharacterized protein family UPF0015, a single member of this family Swiss:O82827 has been identified as an undecaprenyl diphosphate synthase [1]. [1]. 9677368. Molecular cloning, expression, and purification of undecaprenyl. diphosphate synthase. No sequence similarity between E- and. Z-prenyl diphosphate synthases.. Shimizu N, Koyama T, Ogura K;. undecaprenyl diphosphate synthase family protein

undecaprenyl diphosphate synthase (UPPS) family protein catalyzes consecutive condensation reactions of farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) with specific numbers of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) to form long-chain polyprenyl diphosphates, similar to UPPS that catalyzes chain elongation of FPP by eight IPP to form the carrier lipid UPP in bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan biosynthesis

polyprenyl diphosphate synthase

This enzyme builds undecaprenyl diphosphate, or a closely related polyprenyl diphosphate. In bacteria, the product becomes a carrier used for synthesizing cell wall components, while in the Archaea, the product is most likely a precursor of glycosyl carrier lipids. While the fine specificity varies by species, reflected in a variety of EC numbers that may be assigned (2.5.1.31, 2.5.1.86, 2.5.1.87, 2.5.1.88, 2.5.1.89, etc.), the designation UppS is widely used.
