Flies were were reared at 25°C on a standard laboratory diet consisting of yeast, corn starch, and molasses.

RNA was extracted from the hearts of either one-week old or three-week old female flies using the miRNAeasy Mini Kit (QIAGEN, Germantown, MD, USA) as per manufacturer’s protocol. Hearts from 15 female flies were dissected as described previously, removed with fine forceps and pooled as a single sample. RNA was extracted using the Qiagen RNAeasy mini kit (QIAGEN, Germantown, MD, USA).
Barcoded libraries were made using the NEBNext® Ultra II™ Directional RNA Library Prep Kit for Illumina® (NEB, Ipswich, MA, USA)
Libraries were pooled and paired-end sequenced (2X75) on the Illumina NextSeq 500 using the High output V2.5 kit
