Oxidative stress may contribute to the increase in aortic MMP-2 activity, possibly by S-glutathiolation, and this may result in calponin-1 loss and maladaptive vascular remodeling in early hypertension.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 activation by oxidative stress decreases aortic calponin-1 levels during hypertrophic remodeling in early hypertension.

MMP-2 activity is increased in both conductance and resistance arteries in hypertension and contributes to early vascular dysfunction and remodelling. These maladaptive effects were related to the divergent regulation of calponin-1, which is decreased in aortas while is increased in resistance arteries.

Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 Activity is Associated with Divergent Regulation of Calponin-1 in Conductance and Resistance Arteries in Hypertension-induced Early Vascular Dysfunction and Remodelling.

Data suggest that proteolysis of calponin-1 by Mmp2 (matrix metallopeptidase 2) contributes to the down-regulation of calponin-1 in cytoplasm of endothelium and smooth muscle of aorta/arteries in early (1-week) hypertension; however, at 2-weeks, calponin-1 is up-regulated.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 decreases calponin-1 levels and contributes to arterial remodeling in early hypertension.
