    Summary
This gene encodes an opioid receptor, which is a member of the 7 transmembrane-spanning G protein-coupled receptor family. It functions as a receptor for endogenous ligands, as well as a receptor for various synthetic opioids. Ligand binding results in inhibition of adenylate cyclase activity and neurotransmitter release. This opioid receptor plays a role in the perception of pain and mediating the hypolocomotor, analgesic and aversive actions of synthetic opioids. Variations in this gene have also been associated with alcohol dependence and opiate addiction. A recent study provided evidence for translational readthrough in this gene, and expression of an additional C-terminally extended isoform via the use of an alternative in-frame translation termination codon. RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.

    1. NM_001321097.2NP_001308026.2  kappa-type opioid receptor isoform 1

      Status: REVIEWED

      Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (1) encodes two isoforms, which result from the use of alternative in-frame translation termination codons. The shorter isoform (1) results from translation termination at the upstream UGA stop codon , while the longer isoform (1x) results from UGA stop codon readthrough to the downstream UGA termination codon. This RefSeq represents the shorter isoform (1).

Transcript Variant: This variant (1) encodes two isoforms, which result from the use of alternative in-frame translation termination codons. The shorter isoform (1) results from translation termination at the upstream UGA stop codon, while the longer isoform (1x) results from UGA stop codon readthrough to the downstream UGA termination codon. This RefSeq represents the longer, C-terminally extended isoform (1x). As the UGA stop codon has been reported to specify several alternative amino acids (tryptophan, cysteine, arginine and serine), the location of the upstream UGA stop codon in the longer isoform is denoted by an 'X'.
