    1. Our data point to a yet unexpected effect of decreased HTRA1 expression on drusen pathogenesis. Thus not only a higher HTRA1 expression, but an imbalance of HTRA1 might be disease-relevant.

    2. Tests for association revealed a variant in the promoter region of HTRA1 and two variants in the 5'-UTR of ARMS2 to be associated with drusen.

    3. As in humans, one variant within LOC387715/ARMS2 and one in HTRA1 were significantly associated with age-related macular degeneration.
