Studied lateral root initiation and development in Arabidopsis thaliana and identified EXPANSIN A1 (EXPA1) as a cell wall modifying enzyme that controls the cell divisions marking lateral root initiation. Loss of EXPA1 results in defects of the first asymmetric pericycle cell divisions.
