    Summary
    This gene encodes a member of the TGF-beta (transforming growth factor beta) family of growth and differentiation factors that negatively regulates the development and growth of skeletal muscle mass. The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate a mature, functional peptide. Transgenic fish expressing the prodomain of the encoded protein in the skeletal muscles exhibit an increased number of myofibers without a significant difference in fiber size. Knockdown of the expression of this gene in fish induces body mass increases due to hyperplasia or hypertrophy. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2016]
