    Summary
    Encodes a small cysteine-rich protein that is secreted by the egg cell during gamete interactions. The regulated secretion of EC1 by the egg cell upon sperm-egg interaction is proposed to ensure the appropriate localization of the cell-fusion machinery in distinct sperm membrane domains to accomplish gamete fusion.
