Summary
Increased synthesis of RcsF is not needed for RcsC activation, implying that RcsF undergoes modification or conformational change in response to cell surface conditions that signal increased colanic acid synthesis. [More information is available at EcoGene: EG11502]. RcsF was found to be an essential sensory component of the Rcs phosphorelay system and functions in signal transduction in response to glucose and zinc to regulate expression of a large set of genes involved in colanic acid polysaccharide synthesis.
