Tbp - TATA binding protein

Enables RNA polymerase II cis-regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity; RNA polymerase III type 3 promoter sequence-specific DNA binding activity; and TFIIA-class transcription factor complex binding activity. Contributes to RNA polymerase II general transcription initiation factor activity. Involved in DNA-templated transcription. Located in nucleus. Part of transcription factor TFIID complex and transcription factor TFIIIB complex. Is expressed in several structures, including germline cell; male accessory gland; seminal vesicle; terminal filament; and testis. Used to study neurodegenerative disease. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in late onset Parkinson's disease; schizophrenia; spinocerebellar ataxia type 17; and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Orthologous to several human genes including TBP (TATA-box binding protein). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Dec 2024]
