Piezo - piezo
Enables mechanosensitive monoatomic ion channel activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to mechanical stimulus; detection of temperature stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain; and mechanosensory behavior. Located in plasma membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including antennal primordium; epithelium; head epidermis primordium; larval imaginal tissue; and sensory neurons. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis 1; distal arthrogryposis type 3; distal arthrogryposis type 5; and hereditary lymphedema. Orthologous to human PIEZO1 (piezo type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Er blood group)) and PIEZO2 (piezo type mechanosensitive ion channel component 2).
