Summary
This region represents the promoter of the fibroblast growth factor 21 gene. This promoter is stimulated by ER stress, glucose, aryl hydrocarbons, and retinoic acid. A conserved element proximal to the transcription start site contains multiple predicted transcription factor binding motifs and associates with peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha, cAMP responsive element binding protein 3 like 3, MLX interacting protein like/Mlx, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor. Estrogen related receptor gamma induces activity of this promoter through a more distal recognition element. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2016]
