Endometriosis: ectopic and eutopic endometrium

Analysis of ectopic endometria and eutopic endometria from endometriosis patients. Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue at extra-uterine sites. Results provide insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying endometriosis pathogenesis.

Endometriosis transcription profiling

(Submitter supplied) Endometriosis is a complex pathological condition in which multiple components are involved in the disease development and clinical outcome. Endometriosis is mainly an inflammatory codition estrogen-dependent, with unknown pathogenesis, that is characterized by dissemination of edometrium tissue in ectopic position (ovary or pelvic peritoneum). Two main theories rise the pathologic onset: the presence of retrograde menstruation and celomic metaplasia in the pelvic peritoneum, that can occur for development defects. more...

Whole human genome DNA microarray analysis of gene expression in ectopic vs. eutopic endometrium

(Submitter supplied) Brief description of the experiment: The objective of this experiment was to use DNA microarrays to identify differentially expressed genes in eutopic uterine endometrium compared to ectopic endometrium. 174 of the 53,000 genes on the whole human DNA microarrays were changed by 5-fold or greater in ectopic vs. eutopic endometrium. Families of genes that were differentially expressed include immune system and inflammatory pathway genes, genes whose cognate proteins code for cell adhesion, junctional proteins, the extracellular matrix and its remodeling, and cytoskeletal proteins, and ligands, receptors, and components of specific signal transduction pathways. more...
