Microarray analysis of male flies selected for increased aggressive behavior

(Submitter supplied) We generated 4 separate subpopulations of selected flies from 1 starting population of a mixture of Canton-S flies. Two of the populations (AggrI and AggrII) were selected for increased aggression by picking males from a population cage that engaged in the most intense fighting (known as escalation behavior). Thirty males were selected every generation (from a total of 120 males per cage) per line and mated with random virgin females from that same generation. more...

Differential expression in selected adult female Drosophila melanogaster

(Submitter supplied) A study evaluating the effect of stress resistance selection of Drosophila melanogaster. Abstract Here, we report a detailed analysis of changes in gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster selected for multiple eological relevant environmental stress resistance traits. We analyzed females from three biological replicates from seven selection regimes and one control regime using whole genome gene expression arrays. more...

Courtship-exposed male flies

(Submitter supplied) I hypothesized that social interactions, such as those involved in reproductive behaviors, would lead to immediate and assayable changes in gene expression that may have important effects on individual reproductive success and fitness through alterations in physiology or via short-term or long-term changes in nervous system function. Keywords: exposed compared to unexposed treatment

Natural selection shapes genome wide patterns of copy number polymorphism in D. melanogaster

(Submitter supplied) The role natural selection plays in governing the locations and early evolution of copy number mutations remains largely unexplored. Here we employ high-density full-genome tiling arrays to create a fine-scale genomic map of copy number polymorphisms (CNPs) in Drosophila melanogaster. We inferred a total of 2,658 independent CNPs, 56% of which overlap genes. These include CNPs likely to be under positive selection, most notably high frequency duplications encompassing toxin-response genes. more...

Gene expression profiles underlying aggressive behavior in the prefrontal cortex of cattle

(Submitter supplied) This study compared gene expression profiles of 16 prefrontal cortex (PFC) samples from aggressive and non-aggressive cattle breeds: Lidia, selected for agonistic responses, and Wagyu, specialized on meat production and selected for tameness. RNA sequencing was used to identify and classify 918 up and 278 down-regulated differentiated expressed genes (DEG). The functional interpretation of the up-regulated genes in the aggressive cohort revealed enrichment of pathways such as the Alzheimer disease-presenilin, integrins or the ERK/MAPK signaling cascade, all implicated in the development of abnormal aggressive behaviors and neurophysiological disorders. more...

Comparative gene expression profiling of group-housed, less aggressive vs. single-housed, more aggressive male flies

(Submitter supplied) Social experience influences multiple behaviors of many animal species, including aggression. Social isolation often increases aggressiveness. To investigater the molecular basis of social influences on aggressiveness, we performed comparative gene expression profiling on heads from 6-day-old, single-housed, more aggressive and group-housed, less aggressive male flies.
