Transcriptomic profiling permits the identification of pollutant sources and effects in ambient water samples

(Submitter supplied) The delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) is a pelagic fish species endemic to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Estuary in Northern California, listed as endangered under both the USA Federal and Californian State Endangered Species Acts and acts as an indicator of ecosystem health in its habitat range. Interrogative tools are required to successfully monitor effects of contaminants upon the delta smelt, and to research potential causes of population decline in this species. more...

An European eel-specific microarray platform was developed to identify genes involved in response to pollutants

(Submitter supplied) An European eel-specific microarray platform was developed to identify genes involved in response to pollutants. A comparative analysis of gene expression was conducted between European eel Anguilla anguilla individuals from lowly-polluted Wijmeers pond at Uitbergen (Belgium), highly-polluted Hazewinkel pond at Willebroek (Belgium), extremely-polluted Dessel-Schotel canal at the locations of Schotel (Belgium) and low polluted Bolsena lake (Italy) environments.

Using transcriptomic tools to evaluate biological effects across effluent gradients at a diverse set of study sites in Minnesota, USA

(Submitter supplied) To assess the impact of a municiple effluent across different environments, a gradient design (upstream, downstream, and at effluent) was set up across three waste water treatment plant outflows in three different regions of MN. These three sites represents vastly different land use and contamination profiles. The upstream location at each site was used as a point of comparison to reduce site specific differences in water. more...

Winter and fall gene expression in rainbow smelt liver

(Submitter supplied) Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) are freeze-resistant fish that accumulate glycerol and produce an antifreeze protein during winter. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (qPCR) and subtractive hybridization studies have revealed a few genes in smelt liver to be differentially regulated in winter in comparison with the fall when water temperatures are warmer. In order to further define the suite of processes that are regulated seasonally, we undertook a large-scale analysis of gene expression by hybridization of smelt cDNA to the salmonid 16K cGRASP cDNA microarray. more...
