Gene expression during early Arabidopsis flower development

(Submitter supplied) This experiment describes gene expression during early Arabidopsis flower development. We used a 35S:AP1-GR ap1 cal line to induce synchronized flower development by specifically activating the AP1-GR fusion protein in ap1 cal inflorescence-like meristems through dexamethasone treatment. Tissue samples were collected immediately after the treatment, as well as at one-day intervals for the following five days. more...

Meyerowitz Lab Arabidopsis Flower-specific cDNA Array

(Submitter supplied) Elements for the flower-specific cDNA microarray were obtained from three different sources. First, for those genes that are known or suspected to be involved in flower development, we either amplified fragments of their transcribed regions from cDNA or, if available, obtained cDNA clones from EST clone collections. Second, we generated cDNA libraries using RNA extracted from different floral tissues. more...

Global expression profiling applied to the analysis of Arabidopsis stamen development

(Submitter supplied) To obtain detailed information about gene expression during stamen development in Arabidopsis thaliana, we compared, by microarray analysis, the gene expression profile of wild-type inflorescences to those of the floral mutants apetala3, sporocyteless/nozzle, and male sterile 1, in which different aspects of stamen formation are disrupted. These experiments led to the identification of groups of genes with predicted expression at early, intermediate and late stages of stamen development. more...

Comparative transcriptomics among floral organs of the basal eudicot Eschscholzia californica: a reference for comparison with core eudicots and basal angiosperms

(Submitter supplied) Our results provide a foundation for comparative gene expression studies between eudicots and basal angiosperms. We identified whorl-specific gene expression patterns in Eschscholzia, and examined the floral expression of several gene families, such as MADS-box, bHLH and MYB. Interestingly, most homologs of genes important for flower development, except for MADS-box genes, show different expression patterns between Eschscholzia and Arabidopsis. more...

Orchestration of Floral Initiation by APETALA1

(Submitter supplied) The MADS-domain transcription factor APETALA1 (AP1) is a key regulator of Arabidopsis flower development. To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying AP1 function, we identified its target genes during floral initiation using a combination of gene expression profiling and genome-wide binding studies. Many of its targets encode transcriptional regulators, including known floral repressors. The latter genes are down-regulated by AP1, suggesting that it initiates floral development by abrogating the inhibitory effects of these genes. more...

Evolutionary trends in the floral transcriptome: insights from one of the basalmost angiosperms, the water lily Nuphar advena (Nymphaeceae)

(Submitter supplied) Current understanding of floral developmental genetics comes primarily from the core-eudicot model Arabidopsis thaliana. Here we explore the floral transcriptome of the basal angiosperm, Nuphar advena (water lily), for insights into the ancestral developmental program of flowers. Several thousand Nuphar genes with significantly up-regulated floral expression are identified, including homologs of the well-known ABCE floral regulators. more...

Comparative gene expression in floral whorls of the basal eu-dicot Aquilegia formosa

(Submitter supplied) Investigation of genome-wide gene expression in sepals, petals, stamens, staminodia and carpels in pre-anthesis Aquilegia flowers. One goal was to identify transcriptional signatures associated with petaloidy by comparing gene expression in petals and petaloid sepals. Other goals were to study the evolutionary origin and ecological function of staminodia by comparing a) expression patterns in stamens, staminodia and carpels, b) identifying transcriptional regulators expressed in staminodia and c) using gene set enrichment analysis to identify biological processes operating in staminodia.

Comparative transcriptional profiling provides insights into the evolution and development of the zygomorphic flower of Vicia sativa (Papilionoideae)

(Submitter supplied) Background: Vicia sativa (the common vetch) possesses a predominant zygomorphic flower and belongs to the subfamily Papilionoideae, which is related to Arabidopsis thaliana in the eurosid II clade of the core eudicots. Each vetch flower consists of 21 concentrically arranged organs: the outermost five sepals, then five petals and ten stamens, and a single carpel in the center. Methodology/Principal Findings: We explored the floral transcriptome to examine a genome-scale genetic model of the zygomorphic flower of vetch. more...
