(ser-TOH-lee-LY-dig sel TOO-mer)
A rare tumor that forms in the tissues that surround and support the ovaries or testicles. These tumors make a male sex hormone called testosterone. This can cause the appearance of male physical characteristics, such as facial hair and a deep voice, and other symptoms in females and early puberty in males. Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors may be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). They tend to have a good prognosis (outcome) if diagnosed and treated early. Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors are a type of sex cord-stromal tumor. Also called androblastoma and arrhenoblastoma.
