  • Keep hyphens within surnames.
    • Estelle Palmer-Canton   becomes   Palmer-Canton E
    • Ahmed El-Assmy   becomes   El-Assmy A
  • Keep particles, such as O', D', and L'.
    • Alan D. O'Brien   becomes   O'Brien AD
    • Jacques O. L'Esperance   becomes   L'Esperance JO
    • U. S'adeh   becomes   S'adeh U
  • Omit all other punctuation within surnames.
    • Charles A. St. James   becomes   St James CA
