Tamandua tetradactyla, or the lesser anteater, is a native species from South America. It is found in different habitats, from forests to arid savannas and usually feeds on ants, termites and bees. Together with armadillos and sloths, anteaters belong to the Superorder Xenarthra, the only placental group that has evolved in South America. This sample was collected from Anton, a zoo specimen from the TierPark Berlin by researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, and is being used to generate the first chromosome level genome of an anteater as part of the VGP Project.
