Description

The Electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) is found in South America. It is not actually an eel, but belongs to the knifefish order. They are the only species of this order that can produce strong electric currents, using the Sachs organ. This sample was collected by Nidal Karagic, procured by Axel Meyer, sequencing supported by Gene Myers, in collaboration with Richard Durbin, to generate a high-quality reference genome as part of the G10K-VGP and Fish VGP projects.
