A soil sample, collected at Cedar Creek, Minnesota, USA (longitude, -93.2253010; latitude, 45.3852010), was kindly provided by Noah Fierer (Univ. of Colorado, Boulder). The sample had been frozen and stored at -80 deg C. An aliquot (0.5 g) was resuspended in 2.5 mL of PBS/DTT, vortexed for 15 min under aerobic conditions at 20 deg C and an aliquot used for gavage of adult male germ-free C57Bl/6J mice, fed a low fat, plant polysaccharide-rich mouse chow diet, and maintained in the gnotobiotic facility at Washington University in Saint Louis. The uncultured Robinsoniella sp RHS was the most abundant bacterial OTU in the feces of recipient mice.
