Geobacter sulfurreducens strain PCA. This strain was isolated from surface sediments of a hydrocarbon-contaminated ditch in Norman, Oklahoma. It oxidizes acetate to carbon dioxide and water while reducing compounds such as sulfur, fumarate, and various metals such as iron oxides (Fe(III)). Contains a large number of cytochrome c-type oxidases which contribute to the flexibility of this organism's electron transport network. Some of these proteins are important intermediates in electron transfer to the insoluble iron (III) oxides.
