This species can also occur in plants without causing disease symptoms. F. proliferatum produces the mycotoxins fumonisins, fusaproliferin, fusarins, fusaric acid, moniliformin and beauvericin as well as the pigment bikaverin. Strain NRRL 62905 was isolated from a sample of maize kernels from the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa USA.
