Ecological risk assessments for protecting aquatic ecosystems rarely consider the impacts of environmental stress on microbial communities. To incorporate microbial community sensitivity into these evaluations, it is essential to establish sensitivity thresholds for changes in the absolute abundance of viable taxa. High-throughput sequencing has become a common approach for microbial community profiling, yet its semi-quantitative nature limits the ability to accurately assess absolute dynamics of viable community members.
