TRIS (2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol) is a synthetic chemical that is widely used as a buffer, emulsifier, and pharmaceutical. TRIS was long considered biologically inert and no degradation pathway for TRIS was known. We isolated several Pseudomonas sp. strains that are able to metabolise TRIS as a carbon and nitrogen source.
