AEGIS (Ancient Environmental Genomics Initiative for Sustainability) is a multi-centre project, funded by the NovoNordisk Foundation (Denmark) and the Wellcome Trust (UK). The overarching aims of AEGIS are to develop the essential science and methodology to use ancient eDNA – coupled with other ancient and modern biomolecule-based approaches – to identify important organismal associations and genetic adaptations in natural and agroecosystems that will improve future food security under climate change. At the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Tree of Life programme is sequencing to reference standard the genomes of modern species that will enhance the library of genomes available for ancient eDNA mapping.
