MAP4 is present in many tissues but is usually absent from neurons; MAP2 and Tau are mainly neuronal. Members of this family have the ability to bind to and stabilize microtubules. As a result, they are involved in neuronal migration, supporting dendrite elongation, and regulating microtubules during mitotic metaphase. This family features a C-terminal microtubule binding repeat that contains a conserved KXGS motif.
